enjoyed by British and allied shipping in the China Sea. It is even permissible to go further and to attribute to the action taken outside Manila the delay of a month or more which the German squadron experienced in making their way through the Straits of Magellan after sinking Admiral Craddock's ships. But for that delay it is conceivable that the Falkland Islands might have fallen temporarily into German hands.

It is not often that the Governor of a Colony

has the opportunity of expressing appreciation, on behalf of the Colony, of the senior service and I should therefore esteem it an honour if this Despatch could be communicated to the Lords Commis- -sioners of the Admiralty.
